Hon Onofiok Luke, Chairman of the House of Representatives Judicial Committee, asked for an upward intervention fund for the judiciary on Wednesday to help it handle conflicting demands and difficulties.
This came as Ahmed Gambo Saleh, the Executive Secretary of the National Judicial Council, stated that the naira's falling value was a big issue in implementing the budget.
When the Judiciary Commission stood before his Committee to defend the 2022 budget, Hon. Luke made the call.
He stated that the National Assembly will continue to take legislative action to improve the welfare of judicial officials, and he requested the collaboration and participation of all stakeholders.
In this regard, there are a number of stakeholders who should be considered.
Luke also emphasized the importance of providing proper protection for court personnel.
"Our court personnel should have improved living and working circumstances. The necessity to put in place technology that would bring our courtrooms up to par with what is available in other countries is causing the amount allotted to be insufficient.
"The safety of judicial personnel is extremely important to this Committee. As a committee, we have indicated that we should build an enabling environment, not just a working environment, not just decent living circumstances, but a secure one in which our judicial officials may act without impediment and without fear of reprisal.
Harassment or intimidation As a result, we condemn the assassination attempt on Supreme Court Justice Mary Odili. It should not happen again because we are eroding our judicial officials' morale and strength.
"It's pretty disappointing because not only do they face difficulties at work, but they also face difficulties in their salary."
