Since the appointment of Senator Shettima as the Vice Presidential candidate of the APC for the 2023 Presidential Election in Nigeria Two notable politicians from the North-East namely, Babachir Lawal and Yakubu Dogara have activated a panic-button which according to them is aimed at protecting the interest of the Christians in the body polity of Nigeria by balancing the APC Presidential Ticket.
I am a bible believing Christian, and a ‘born again’ at that, and a politician of the APC stuck I assume that the due have me in mind when they say they are protecting the interest of the Christians in APC. I am therefore expected to key into their new found consciousness or at best be mute. But before I do that, I have a bouquet of questions for these two defenders of Christian faith:
(1) Since the amalgamation of APC, both Bola Ahmed Tinubu and President Mohammadu Buhari have altertenately acted as Co-leaders of the APC. Nobody has questioned the monolithic religious content of the leadership. It did not matter to Dogara or Babachir. Is this because these positions are stations too remote from their destinations?
(2) Benue state is the most homogenous Christian state in the North. Why was the state sidelined in the hastily convened conference of Northern Christians held in Abuja?
(3) The positions of President and National Party Chairman directly affect the geo-religions distribution of lower positions. Why was Babachir Lawal and Dogara nonchalant and lukewarm when Senator George Akume a juggernaut of the APC and a Northern Christian, a Knight of the Catholic Church stood for the position of National Chairman of the party?
(4) During the recently held APC convention, delegates of Christian faith had enough votes to give Vice President Osibanjo a lead or at least save Pastor Tunde Bakere the embarrassment of a zero vote. Why did Dogara and Babachir not enter the vanguard of galvanizing votes for the Christian contestants.
(5) Babachir and Dogara were likely beneficiaries of the position of the Vice President in the event that Senator Shettime was not considered. Is it no more the universal norm that you do not arbitrate in your own cause etc. etc. etc? When satisfactory answers are given to these questions the altruistic Christian Community will have a better pedestal to judge fairly, if not we will view the activities of these our brothers as a mare invitation to fan the embers of their comedy.
