When I first opened my eyes,
Nigeria was the land that came into sight.
The very first air I breathed;even my first food,
Straight from Nigeria's soil, oh, it felt so good!
On this land I had my first fall,
Even here I learnt to stand,
Learnt to sing, learnt to chant,
Nigeria's anthem, Her pledge at heart.
And then...
Growing up into the abyss of misdeeds,
The ones I hear, the ones I read.
Watching the future sink into the ground,
The Naira depreciating everyday against dollar, even Pounds.
Look on in sadness as Justice becomes a Myth,
Hearing of fellow men being butchered like meat.
Quality education, now a thing of the past..
Even good health care is vanishing fast!
This great giant yearns to be unveiled,
Her potentials are too precious to be caged.
It's high time we forgot self,
Nigeria is too great to be on the lower shelf.
Please, don't call us 'leaders of tomorrow'
For at this my brows would furrow.
Whatever I can do, whatever I can say..
I have to start now...Yes,Today!
We're the hope of the future.Yes!
Our generation will soon take charge.Of course!
But if we don't take part now,
How do we lead when that time comes?
The change we desire must start from our minds,
So that we'll be able, our great country to find.
For they say, 'Tomorrow shall never come'.
Let's sharpen today that our future, Nigeria's promising future can slowly take form!
